Baidu, Inc. reported Q1 2026 earnings showing its AI operations now account for more than half of its general-business revenue, helping offset weakness in online advertising. Management emphasized heavy AI investment and cost discipline in a May 18 press release.
Quarterly Financial Results and AI Revenue Shift
Baidu reported total revenue of RMB 32.1 billion for the quarter ended March 31, 2026, a decline of about 2% year on year. Adjusted earnings per American depositary share (ADS) were approximately RMB 12.06, modestly above analyst forecasts. The company recorded a sharp year-on-year drop in GAAP net income and did not provide explicit guidance, citing a balance between large AI investments and cost control.
The company said its Core AI-powered Business exceeded half of Baidu General Business revenue for the first time, signaling a structural shift toward AI as the primary growth engine. CEO Robin Li stated, "In Q1, our Core AI-powered Business exceeded half of Baidu General Business revenue for the first time, marking a clear signal that AI has become the core driver of Baidu."
AI cloud infrastructure revenue reached RMB 8.8 billion, growing about 79% year on year. AI-native marketing services rose roughly 36%, while AI applications remained flat. Meanwhile, revenue from online marketing services fell about 22% to RMB 12.6 billion, reflecting the shift in the company’s revenue mix.
Apollo Go, Baidu’s autonomous ride-hailing service, provided more than 3.2 million rides in the quarter, up about 120% year on year, and had delivered over 22 million rides cumulatively as of April 2026. Baidu also highlighted its ERNIE large-language model and related generative AI products as central to commercializing both its cloud and applications businesses.
Management framed the quarter as an inflection point where AI is now the principal growth engine, while acknowledging that heavy AI investment has weighed on reported profits. They indicated expectations for AI to drive greater value in coming quarters without providing numeric targets, leaving investors to watch whether the expanding AI revenue mix will support a sustained recovery in GAAP profitability.
