AstraZeneca earnings topped profit forecasts while revenue was narrowly below expectations in results for the second quarter and six months ended June 30, 2026. Management reaffirmed full-year 2026 guidance and its long-term revenue ambition.

Quarter Results and Guidance

AstraZeneca PLC (NYSE: AZN; LSE: AZN) reported first-half total revenue of $30.7 billion, up 9.0% reported and 6.0% at constant exchange rates (CER). Excluding generic competition impacts on diabetes drug Farxiga and cardiovascular drug Brilinta, revenue rose 11.0% at CER.

For the six months, core earnings per share (EPS) increased 11.0% year-over-year to $5.21, while reported EPS rose 4.0% to $3.60. The board raised the interim dividend by $0.03 to $1.06 per share.

In the second quarter, revenue reached about $15.4 billion, growing roughly 5.0–6.0% year-over-year but narrowly missing consensus estimates. Core EPS rose to $2.63, exceeding the roughly $2.48 forecast. Management reiterated full-year guidance calling for mid- to high-single-digit revenue growth at CER and low-double-digit core EPS growth at CER. The guidance assumes a core tax rate between 18.0% and 22.0% and a low-single-digit positive foreign-exchange impact on revenue.

The combination of a near-term profit beat and a slight revenue shortfall signals stronger underlying earnings momentum amid uneven top-line trends, requiring investors to weigh that momentum against structural pressures elsewhere in the portfolio.

Growth Drivers and Pipeline Challenges

Double-digit growth in oncology and rare-disease medicines drove the group’s first-half expansion, offsetting weaker sales in BioPharmaceuticals. The latter faced pressure from the U.S. loss of exclusivity for Farxiga and China’s volume-based procurement program, which reduces drug prices.

The company disclosed recent late-stage clinical setbacks. The CARDIO-TTRansform trial of Wainua (eplontersen) failed, and a late-stage trial of Ultomiris (ravulizumab) in patients with a vascular complication after stem-cell transplant missed its primary endpoint. These outcomes have intensified scrutiny of the pipeline’s depth even as newer franchises support current growth.

Chief Executive Pascal Soriot reaffirmed the long-term goal of reaching $80.0 billion in total revenue by 2030, a target first outlined at the 2023 investor day. He said management expects more than 20 high-value clinical readouts over the next 18 months, a dense schedule that could influence the medium-term trajectory toward that goal.
