Archer Aviation Inc. (NYSE: ACHR) and Anduril Industries unveiled a series hybrid-electric autonomous VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) platform at the Farnborough International Airshow on July 20, 2026. The defense variant, named Thunder, targets a first flight in 2027, boosting Archer’s shares.

Platform and Flight Plan

The joint platform features a dual-tiltrotor design powered by a series hybrid-electric powertrain, combining Archer’s electric propulsion and rotor engineering with Anduril’s autonomy and mission-system software. This configuration enables vertical takeoff and wingborne cruise, allowing operations from austere sites without runways.

The aircraft uses variable-rotor RPM, described as “optimum-speed tiltrotors,” to reduce cruise power demand and fuel consumption while lowering its acoustic signature for low-altitude survivability. It is sized to carry modular heavy payloads, including logistics, aeromedical kits, intelligence-surveillance-reconnaissance packages, and mission-specific stores.

Both companies reported multiple test flights with full-scale surrogate aircraft to validate propulsion, rotor control, and avionics integration. Their joint press release stated, “Anduril and Archer today unveiled their jointly-developed autonomous VTOL aircraft platform, built to serve both defense and commercial applications.”

Commercial and Strategic Implications

Anduril introduced Thunder as a Group 5 autonomous attack rotorcraft designed to operate as a loyal wingman alongside crewed attack and assault platforms. Archer retains rights to market a commercial configuration derived from the same platform and plans to announce its first commercial customers later this week.

The program is framed as a dual-use effort to spread development and production costs across commercial and military markets. Archer links the platform to its years of air-taxi development and Midnight-class manufacturing, adapting rotor and propulsion expertise to heavier logistics and specialized commercial missions.

Chief Executive Adam Goldstein reiterated the company’s focus on achieving certification of its core eVTOL operations by the previously stated target year, describing the timeline as management commentary rather than updated formal guidance. The unveiling and timeline align with Archer’s broader commercial ramp and planned customer rollouts.
