Apple Inc. introduced new Mac mini and Mac Studio desktops on 2026-08-25, led by the Apple M6 chip—its first 2-nanometer design—and the M5 Ultra, which the company described as its most powerful chip. The launch emphasizes local on-device AI compute for large language models (LLMs) and AI agents.

M6 and M5 Ultra Chips

Apple said in a press release on 2026-08-25 that the M6 is its first state-of-the-art 2-nanometer chip, designed to advance every compute block with a focus on AI capabilities. The M6 features a larger 12-core CPU complex, a 12-core GPU with additional Neural Accelerators, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine, which Apple said doubles peak neural compute compared with the prior generation.

The M5 Ultra, introduced with the Mac Studio, is Apple’s first quad-die architecture in the M-series. It scales to a 36-core CPU, up to an 80-core GPU, and up to 512GB of unified memory, which Apple framed as sufficient to run enormous LLMs entirely on device. Apple described the M5 Ultra as its most powerful chip ever, targeting large-scale AI and professional workloads.

Apple said, “Apple today debuted M6 in the new Mac mini and M5 Ultra in the new Mac Studio, providing an extraordinary leap in performance and AI capabilities.”

Mac Mini and Mac Studio Configurations

Apple said the Mac mini will be available with M6 and M5 Pro chips, while the Mac Studio will offer M5 Max and M5 Ultra options. The M5 Pro Mac mini targets higher-end professional workflows, featuring up to an 18-core CPU and a 20-core GPU for tasks such as visual effects.

U.S. starting prices are $899 for the M6 Mac mini and $1,699 for the M5 Pro Mac mini. The Mac Studio starts at $2,499 with M5 Max and $5,499 with M5 Ultra. Education pricing offers discounts of $100 on each model.

Customers can pre-order the new Mac mini and Mac Studio starting 2026-08-25 through Apple’s online store and app in 30 countries and regions. Deliveries and in-store availability begin 2026-09-22. Mac Studio configurations with 512GB of unified memory will ship in late October 2026.

Desktops Positioned as AI Platforms

Apple framed the desktop updates as enabling local hosting of AI agents and reducing reliance on cloud computing. The company positioned Mac desktops as platforms for AI development and high-end creative and technical work.

Secondary reporting summarized Apple’s performance claims, noting the M6 delivers up to four times faster AI performance and double the graphics and storage speeds compared with the prior M4-based Mac mini. Configurations with M5 Max and linked M5 Ultra systems can accelerate LLMs nearly fourfold and be combined to run trillion-parameter models.

This hardware-focused push highlights Apple’s effort to control local AI compute for developers and professionals, reinforcing the Mac desktop line’s role in AI workloads.
