American Airlines announced on Aug. 18, 2026, that it will install seatback screens at every seat on new narrowbody deliveries starting in 2028 and expand premium seating across its narrowbody fleet to attract higher-spending travelers.

Fleet Upgrade Details and Features

The program covers more than 800 narrowbody aircraft across American’s Airbus and Boeing single-aisle fleet. It will begin with new deliveries in 2028, followed by retrofits expected to finish in the early next decade. This represents a broad upgrade affecting a large portion of the carrier’s narrowbody operations.

The new in-seat entertainment system will feature 4K displays, Bluetooth audio pairing, USB-C charging ports, and personalized content options. These hardware and connectivity improvements form the baseline offering for the affected narrowbodies.

American already operates over 140 long-haul aircraft equipped with seatback screens, providing experience with integrated inflight entertainment that will extend to its single-aisle planes through this program.

Premium Seating Expansion and Strategy

Currently, premium seating accounts for about 25% of seats on narrowbody departures. American plans to increase this to roughly 40% by adding more first-class rows and extra-legroom Main Cabin Extra seats. This shift significantly changes the cabin mix on single-aisle flights and boosts the carrier’s inventory of higher-priced seats.

The expansion aims to attract higher-spending travelers and narrow a profitability gap with Delta Air Lines and United Airlines by shifting narrowbody capacity toward higher-fare cabins. The company described the initiative as “one of the most significant investments in the onboard experience in our history,” framing it as a strategic, product-led effort to enhance customer appeal and profitability after previously scaling back seatback screens on single-aisle aircraft.

By combining hardware upgrades with a larger premium footprint, American is repositioning its domestic narrowbody product to compete more directly on onboard experience and fare mix with its major U.S. rivals. The rollout will phase in with new deliveries first, followed by retrofits over subsequent years.
