AMD said on September 28, 2026, that it will acquire World Labs, an AI research start-up, in an all-stock transaction to add spatial-intelligence expertise and accelerate development of AI hardware, software, and systems for robotics.
All-Stock Deal and Closing Timeline
The company entered a definitive agreement to acquire World Labs in a deal valued at approximately $8.2 billion. The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.
Spatial AI and Leadership Integration
AMD said the acquisition will bring World Labs’ researchers and model experts to strengthen its AI hardware, software, and systems development around emerging AI models and applications. World Labs develops spatial-intelligence models that generate, reconstruct, and simulate interactive 3D environments from text, image, and video inputs. It also builds technology for robotic learning and simulation.
World Labs CEO and co-founder Dr. Fei-Fei Li is expected to join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting to CEO Lisa Su. The World Labs team will continue its AI model research after the transaction closes.
“The acquisition will bring a world-class team of researchers and model experts to AMD, strengthening its ability to develop AI hardware, software and systems around the needs of emerging models and applications,” the company said in its September 28 press release.
