3M Company (NYSE: MMM) reported stronger-than-expected underlying profitability in its second-quarter 2026 earnings and raised its full-year adjusted outlook, the company said in a July 21 press release. The results reflected mid-single-digit organic growth, margin expansion, and robust cash-flow conversion.
Quarter Results and Guidance
3M filed a Form 8-K on July 21 furnishing the press release as Exhibit 99.1. The company reported second-quarter net sales of $6.5 billion, up 2.4% year over year. Adjusted sales also totaled $6.5 billion, with adjusted organic growth of 5.4% excluding manufactured PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) products.
Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) rose 11% year over year to $2.40, while adjusted operating margin increased 40 basis points to 24.9%. On a GAAP basis, diluted EPS was $1.78 and operating margin was 15.1%. These results exceeded consensus estimates, which had centered around adjusted EPS of roughly $2.24 and revenue near $6.4 billion. William Brown, chairman and chief executive, said, "We delivered a strong second quarter, exceeding expectations."
The company raised its full-year adjusted EPS guidance to a range of $8.80 to $8.95 from a prior range of $8.50 to $8.70. It also increased its outlook for adjusted total sales growth to greater than 4.5%, based on more than 3.5% adjusted organic growth. The updated guidance includes expected adjusted operating-income margin expansion of 70 to 80 basis points and adjusted operating cash flow of $5.8 billion to $6.0 billion. The company noted this outlook does not yet incorporate the July 1 closing of its Madison Fire & Rescue acquisition.
Cash Flow and Capital Returns
3M reported operating cash flow of $1.0 billion for the quarter and adjusted free cash flow of $1.3 billion. Adjusted free cash flow conversion—the ratio of adjusted free cash flow to adjusted net income—was 107% in the quarter, with guidance for conversion above 100% for the full year. The company returned $1.4 billion to shareholders in the quarter through dividends and share repurchases.
