Alphabet's Google signed an agreement with the Department of Defense on April 28, 2026, allowing its Gemini AI models to operate on classified networks for mission planning and weapons targeting. The deal prompted more than 600 employees to urge CEO Sundar Pichai to reject classified AI partnerships over ethical concerns.

Classified Access and Safeguards

The agreement amends an existing nonclassified contract, permitting Google’s AI to be used on classified Defense Department networks for any lawful government purpose, including mission planning and weapons targeting. Google must assist the Pentagon in adjusting AI safety settings and content filters upon request but does not have veto power over lawful uses.

The contract specifies that the technology is not intended for domestic mass surveillance or fully autonomous weapons. Google affirmed its commitment to the public-private consensus that such applications require appropriate human oversight.

Employee Backlash and Defense Partnerships

On April 27, 2026, over 600 Google employees, including engineers from DeepMind and Google Cloud, signed a letter to Pichai urging the company to reject classified AI contracts on ethical grounds. They cited risks of misuse in autonomous weapons and surveillance, along with insufficient oversight.

The Pentagon has similar classified AI partnerships with OpenAI and xAI. Google previously provided AI agents for nonclassified Defense work in March 2026. Earlier contracts with AI labs, including Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic, were reported to be worth up to $200 million each.

This amendment places Google alongside peers in classified Department of Defense partnerships, raising governance and reputational questions that investors and management may need to consider as the company expands its defense work.
