Disney announced on Dec. 11, 2025, a three-year licensing deal with OpenAI that makes the studio the first major content partner on Sora, OpenAI’s short-form generative AI video platform. The agreement also establishes a commercial relationship for Disney to expand OpenAI tools across Disney+ and its employee operations.

Deal Terms and Structure

The Walt Disney Company (DIS) will license content to Sora under a three-year agreement, allowing the platform to generate short, user-prompted social videos featuring more than 200 characters, costumes, props, vehicles, and environments from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars. As part of the deal, Disney will invest $1 billion in OpenAI and receive warrants to purchase additional equity. Disney will also become a major OpenAI enterprise customer, using OpenAI’s application programming interfaces (APIs) to develop new products and deploying ChatGPT for employee use. The transaction remains subject to negotiation of definitive agreements, corporate and board approvals, and customary closing conditions.

Licensing Scope and Safety

The license excludes talent likenesses and voices, focusing solely on characters and related intellectual property. Disney and OpenAI committed to responsible AI deployment, including trust-and-safety measures such as age-appropriate policies and controls to prevent illegal or harmful content. Both companies will respect the rights of content owners and individuals regarding the use of their voice and likeness.

ChatGPT Images will generate images from user prompts within seconds using the same Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars intellectual property. Selected fan-created Sora videos may be curated for Disney+, and the companies will collaborate to develop new generative AI experiences for Disney+ subscribers, enhancing ways to connect with Disney stories and characters.

Together, the licensing, equity investment, and enterprise relationship align Disney’s creative assets with OpenAI’s generative models, positioning the studio to extend its characters into short-form AI experiences while leveraging the technology internally for product development.
