Amazon (AMZN) is developing an Amazon AI phone codenamed Transformer, according to unnamed sources in a report published on 2026-03-20. The device aims to embed Alexa across shopping and media services. The early-stage project could be canceled if Amazon’s strategy or costs change.

Transformer Project and Design

The Transformer project is led by a sub-team called ZeroOne within Amazon’s Devices and Services division. Formed about a year ago, the team is headed by J Allard, a former Microsoft executive who worked on Xbox and Zune. Amazon declined to comment.

The phone is envisioned as a personalized, AI-driven device with Alexa as an always-on user touchpoint. It would streamline access to Amazon shopping, Prime Video, Prime Music, and partner services like Grubhub. The design explores both a full-featured smartphone and a minimalist handset inspired by the Light Phone. Concepts include mini-apps that could reduce reliance on traditional app stores while keeping Alexa central but not necessarily as the phone’s operating system.

Risks and Market Context

The project follows Amazon’s 2014 Fire Phone, which launched in June 2014 and was discontinued in September 2015 after a $170 million inventory write-down. Sources warned the effort could be scrapped if Amazon’s strategy shifts or financial concerns arise.

Secondary reports noted broader challenges, including a projected 13% decline in global smartphone shipments in 2026. This market contraction could complicate the commercial case for a device-led push to deepen services monetization and daily user engagement.

The device could alter how consumers access Amazon services and how the company deploys device-led distribution, but it faces legacy product risk and a shrinking hardware market.
